    Oh. My. God. Eye Roll

“[Actor/Actress] speaks out against Disney / in support of Kimmel”

    Lemmy:

    • Well, what about [other actors/actresses]? Imagine if it was them saying this. Why are they so quiet?
    • It would be more meaningful if they actually had a show on Disney right now. Since they don’t, it’s just performative theater.
    • [Actor active with Disney speaks out] If he cared about Disney ethics, he wouldn’t be making movies for them anyway.

Can we not just appreciate the high-profile support here? Is nothing ever good enough for you people? What does it freaking take to satisfy you??

They must simultaneously both work on major current projects AND abstain from interacting with Disney, ever, to sustain the moral high ground. 🫨🫡

Well to be fair their chosen profession is nothing more than a pillar of the institutions that keep the poor poor and the rich rich. It’s not really art at their level of fame and influence no matter the “good” they do. I’ll take my downvotes though.

I didn’t say acting wasn’t art as an art form; I said at their level it isn’t art. It’s propaganda. It’s capitalism. It’s whatever the company that makes the multibillion dollar blockbuster says it is.

Look, you and many others aren’t going to see it from my perspective. You get to hide behind the shield of “ART IS ART” when in reality that isn’t the case in many instances. If Pedro Pascal wants to take his huge pay checks from Marvel, a Disney owned company, and side with trans people and free speech etc that’s fine. But I don’t see how that’s a genuine representation of the quality of the man. He could stop doing the big budget, focus group approved movies and stick to indies or be super selective of the projects he takes and cement his perceived quality, but he won’t and you guys won’t judge him for it because at the end of the day he’s well liked and really that’s all that matters to people. People hate being forced to look at things/people they like in this way. It’s natural and causes that uncomfortable cognitive dissonance feeling, but at the end of it you still get to go “oh well I still love him and his art is wonderful and this guy on the Internet is just a sad nutjob and he’s the problem so I can ignore his opinion” and go about your lives.

All they have to do is shut the fuck up. No one should care about their opinions. The moral high ground was lost when they started working for one of the most ethically corrupt companies on the planet.

I just blocked the instance. I’m not judging based on that since the instances that do block ml are (still) the minority. Tankies notwithstanding, there are too many communities people would FOMO about if an instance were to defed from ml.

That said, I would happily support the admins’ decision to do so if they ever decide to, but I’m not gonna insist they do since I can block it myself

Here’s my unpopular opinion: people like what you describe are merely the other side of the zealot coin that is shared by MAGAts and the conservatives they purport to hate.

Generally important to remember that groups are not homogenous. Lemmy isn’t saying all of those things, up to three separate groups of people on Lemmy are.

Not wrong, but that’s 3 separate groups all with the same “nothing is ever good enough” / “perfect is the enemy of good” / “purity testing” attitude.

It gets old fast, but it usually manifests in smaller doses over a longer period of time. With all the support coming in for Kimmel the last few days, and these people and their constant nitpickig and negging on everything, I’ve reached my limit of that kind of attitude far faster than I can recover.

Capt. Janeway, Ensign Kim has been making inappropriate overtures towards seven of nine, and it’s making her uncomfortable. After your clear and rational argument regarding the Mandalorian guy, what do we do?

I don’t know what that’s supposed to mean. Disney is a notoriously shitty company.

There have been multiple different articles posted like this one of various actors throwing in support for Kimmel / admonishing Disney. A good chunk of the replies to those posts are in the exact vein (or closely paraphrased) in my comment above and yours to which I replied. The common theme is nitpicking and whining and nothing ever being good enough.

I’m struggling to think of a single large corporation that hasn’t done something shitty like engaging in questionable labor practices, curbed unionization, influenced lawmakers to weaken worker/consumer/environmental protections, gave CEOs massive salaries while cutting healthcare options etc…

I know there are some exceptions to the rule, but we can’t all work at those (probably what, like, three?) companies.

Capitalism will swallow the human side of every paying position eventually.

Just because they’ve all done shitty things doesn’t mean they’re all equally shitty.

Yeah, why do famous actors always work for big companies, why can’t famous actors only ever work for small independent companies? Since in this binary world, if something isn’t perfectly 1, it might as well be 0. You shouldn’t have a single fault, or you are faulty. You should be able to walk through the mud without getting dirty.

I think what you’re trying to say here is that if actors worked for small independent companies that they wouldn’t be famous. However you’re not considering the other side of that coin, which is that if they actually did that, they would either make those small companies into big ones, or make the big ones (like Disney) more ethical. But Disney gets to remain the big unethical company because no one cares about anything but money.

No no no. You see, we have to accept that Disney is the top dog, there´s nothing we can do about it. Pay them to watch Pedro revive their dying Star Wars IP for them and feel good about all his bravery both on and off-screen
