  • For me it wasn’t even matter of reddit only being tolerable via third party apps, third party apps were Reddit.

Reddit released their first app in 2014. My email shows I purchased “Reddit is Fun (Premium)” in 2013, and I know I used other apps before that.

Reddit is Fun WAS Reddit for me for 10+ years.

When it went away and I had to change anyway, I jumped to the closest thing. (Eventually landing on Voyager.)

  • I think in part it’s a response to such short seasons.

When you only get 8 episodes, spending an episode doing something different or just focusing on one character can feel like a waste.

Think about the Picard flute episode of TNG, if we only had 8 episode seasons and that was one of them, people would probably be upset.

But ultimately I’m happy with “filler” episodes, because the character development is usually worth it. Even if that episode is rated poorly, it usually improves the overall story.

  • I don’t mind it as much for tight story forward shows, not that more episodes wouldn’t be bad in some cases, but usually 10 episodes is the right amount to tell a story.

Shows they are more monster of the week, or plot of the week, like King of the Hill or Star Trek, they would benefit by having more episodes.

Shows that are telling a season long story, like Severance or Only Murders in the Building, they work better with a 10 episode run.

And I appreciate shows that don’t stretch to fit the 10 episode run. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was perfect at 6 episodes. I just watched The Miniature Wife and by episode 6 I was disappointed to find out it had been stretched to 10 episodes. They probably should have done it in 6 or 8.

  • The new season, which will be the show’s 15th overall, will debut all 10 episodes on July 20. Hulu originally picked up 20 episodes of the revival. Following its successful return in 2025, Hulu renewed the show for two additional seasons, which will bring it to Season 17.

    That’s excellent news.

I do wish we got “full seasons” of 20+ episodes. For shows like this having more room to explore the characters generally turns out better. I’d love to see more Good Hank, his one episode this past season was great.

  • I mean SNW is just generally good quality Trek. If the only way we get good quality Trek is latching it to existing Trek eras, then fine.

But I think exploring new eras is what makes Trek fun and interesting. I wasn’t a fan of the Discovery time jump, but the concept of The Burn was interesting. Once they had done it and began to explore it, I was interested, even as the quality was uneven.

I maintain that one of the biggest problems with Enterprise was that after three excellent 90s Trek shows we were ready to explore the galaxy. Especially after Voyager, we’re finally home! But then we’re reset back to the start. I was excited by Picard because we finally started exploring that era. Although we didn’t really have a fun series in that era until Lower Decks.

But that’s what excited me about Starfleet Academy. We’re in the far future, we’re rebuilding the Federation, we’re starting with the cadets, I’m in! And… it’s gone.

So if Year One is how we get good Trek, so be it. But I want to continue the stories we’re already telling. We’ve already set it up after Picard season 3. We gave Seven a ship. Let’s go follow that.
