Move comes after rightwing Republican accuses New York City mayoral candidate of concealing support for ‘terrorism’

The Trump administration has raised the possibility of stripping Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic mayoral candidate for New York City, of his US citizenship as part of a crackdown against foreign-born citizens convicted of certain offences.

Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, appeared to pave the way for an investigation into Mamdani’s status after Andy Ogles, a rightwing Republican representative for Tennessee, called for his citizenship to be revoked on the grounds that he may have concealed his support for “terrorism” during the naturalization process.

Mamdani, 33, who was born in Uganda to ethnic Indian parents, became a US citizen in 2018 and has attracted widespread media attention – and controversy – over his vocal support for Palestinian rights.

I’m stocking up on ammunition in case I need it for self-defense and using a no-log VPN when criticizing the government.

So I’m gonna go with “No.”

It’s an instrument, not a solution. In general I’d advise everyone to think of security thus:

If someone wants to find your ass, they’ll find your ass.

But if you follow all the best practices, they won’t find your ass accidentally or just for fun. They’ll have to work.

No, we’re about as far from OK as a country can get. The world needs to unite against us and muster the largest liberation force ever seen. And I mean the entire world literally every nation that can send warriors, send them. Germans, you have been where we are. You know, all too well, where this road leads. You could not turn yourselves back from it, and so you needed the help of 4 allied world powers. Now, one of those world powers is trudging down that same road you walked almost a century ago. And, I don’t think we will be able to turn ourselves back, just as you could not.

Germans, you have been where we are. You know, all too well, where this road leads.

Nope. Germans will not help. They have seen where this road leads, and they’ve decided that they must never do anything military again. They prefer allowing all of the rest of the world to turn 100 % fascist over doing one single small thing that somehow hints towards militarism. Germans allow the road to lead where it leads, as long as that does not happen in Germany.

Also, for the same reason, in Germany it is extremely impolite calling someone a nazi. As long as they aren’t openly showing a swastika or publicly calling for a genocide with that specific word, or lifting their arm in the specific way done by Germans in 1930’s and 1940’s, they are allowed to do what they do. If you call someone a nazi, you are comparing their acts to what Germany did in 1940’s, and it’s considered a grave insult towards the victims of those times. It is not acceptable in Germany to say to someone is behaving just like a nazi, and therefore, it is de facto not acceptable calling out a nazi.

Germany is the last country you can expect to stand up against nazis, precisely because they’re so traumatized by their own past. It’s also why I expect Germany to eventually fall under a nazi rule again some day. When you cannot talk about a danger, you cannot stop it.

We better start preparing for a stronger resistance now while we still can.

      1. find local communities and get involved to make connections
      2. We can effect things drastically with a general strike. This targets the establishment’s income streams, and can bring a fascist government to its knees if done on a large enough scale.
      3. Contact a union and attempt to unionize your workplace so that the general strike is even more effective (plus, ya know, better pay and working conditions as a bonus!)

This method would not only work in the US, but anywhere in the world.

      Union Suggestions:

      1. Continuing to participate in publicly visible resistance demonstrations like 50501 (the next one is July 17th) to encourage others to stand up with you and prove to that there are millions of others who will join them in the fight. A large part of Nazi Germany’s success in taking over the country was a lack of massive public demonstrations against the new regime, making people feel helpless and afraid to take a stand.

If we put in the work, we can resist this and we can win. Look at how effective these methods were when used in Chile in 2019.. If we completely reject the political system and rebel on a mass scale, there is NOTHING they can do to stop us.

If you’d prefer a more standard union, there’s quite a few to choose from. The United Workers Union looks to be alright.

An issue with more ‘standard’ unions is that they are often centralized with leaders that can become corporate captured, and thus begin to actually work in the interests of the capital owners to only achieve modest or lackluster gains from negotiations or strikes. They also often don’t have a particular interest in truly changing the status quo, such as working toward building up popular movements to challenge capitalism itself, instead only hoping for a wage increase so they can continue as usual, with a little more breathing room.

The ASF-IWA doesn’t demand that their members don’t vote in political elections, only that as an entity, they’re more focused on direct-action instead of waiting for permission from a corporate captured system.

But in the end, joining any union is still a win in my book.

I can already see the headlines from later this year and the next, about how “no one could see it coming” and “why didn’t anyone warn me(better)”. You can actually just go to communities making fun of pro-brexit folk and see the same quotes from them afterwards.

In this specific case? We’ve spent the last two decades watching overly broad anti terrorism laws get passed under the implicit agreement they wouldn’t be abused. Then comes Trump. Americans have been asleep at the wheel since the 1970’s. That’s part of why right wing rhetoric keeps getting more extreme. They need to keep their voting base engaged. Most people don’t want anything to do with politics. If that doesn’t change then no amount of reform will prevent us from voting ourselves out of a democracy.

With at least 70% of us living paycheck to paycheck, and 48% of us having $1,000 or less in savings, I don’t think that a national strike is likely. I agree that it would be by far the most impactful thing we could collectively do, but hell - at least half of us are one missed paycheck away from homelessness, and America really fucking hates the homeless. Combine that with the fact that most people get their family health insurance from their job, and the fact that our Senate just voted to practically obliterate medicare / medicaid, and you get an extra level of devastating consequences for losing your job. And people would lose their jobs. Even if a significant amount of people are participating in the nation-wide strike, employers would be very heavy-handed with the dismissals. I just don’t think that it’s in the cards for us.

I think a general strike would be effective, but dangerous when people are kept so close to poverty.

Remember the pandemic, we “all” stopped going into work? Except the grocery store workers, and the food processor workers, and those that distribute the food, and water treatment plant staff, and the power plant, and hospital staff, and taxis, and drug store workers, and so on and on. Do those people stop working? How many people can’t obtain the things they need beyond their next paycheck? What if in addition, the store shelves are empty?

I agree, it’s the most feasible way to fight back, so don’t get me wrong. But just like union dues and preparation enable a local strike, accounting for food, water, amenities…a general strike would need to do that or else we would be fighting a war of attrition not just against billionaires with multi-year bunkers but also against ourselves.
