You can also hate a place and not leave it because you’re too poor/disconnected to leave AmeriKKKa

Tell it to the migrants who walked to the US from south America with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

And why, pray tell, do you think these people are walking to AmeriKKKa? Which local country’s meddling in their home country’s foreign affairs destabilized their homes and forced them to leave for the nearest (relatively) stable rich nation? I’ll give you a hint: AmeriKKKa AmeriKKKa AmeriKKKa AmeriKKKa AmeriKKKa

Some time ago, I saw a YT video where some guy said that he loves Italy, but Italy doesn’t love him back. For a long time, he tried to keep is YT business in Italy, but the system just made it impossible, so he had to move. A tragic story.

Same goes for fandoms/communities: You can still like a community despite not interacting with it.

Yes because the Spanish government kept saying I was an “illegal immigrant” and I had “overstayed my visa.”

I’ve spent much of my adult life being transient, going to where I find work. It’s given me the ability to see interesting places, but rarely to know them deeply. There have been places I wanted to stay. Good community, good support networks. I loved the place, but struggled to find work. I left. It isn’t always great but I was used to moving.

I can’t imagine what it is like for immigrants traveling longer distances than me. Just for work and a better life. I believe they are leaving good communities and support networks not just for work, but for bigger reasons than I can really understand. How awful to get to a place and find it to be hateful towards them but have no immediate option to leave. It shouldn’t be that way.

A “Showerthought” is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you’re doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

  • Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
  • When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
  • More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as “capitalism” and “communism”. If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy’s Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
