there’s also other issues that are sometimes being quoted, such as: housing being seen as a commodity, housing being held by a few big house-owners. but i’m not convinced that that alone could cause prices to skyrocket.

if there’s a whole lot of developers trying to gain from housing economy, then there would be more houses being built until there’s more housing supply than demand, then prices would go down again until they stabilize somewhere. but that doesn’t seem to be what’s happening.

sometimes, the city and community are called responsible for keeping land area expensive (by not making more land area available to be built on). this probably varies geographically, and i find it quite hard to believe that communities around the (western) world would not have realized this one simple trick to make houses more affordable again. so i guess there’s more to it.

i think that lots of things broke.

• one issue is that living expenses didn’t rise, but wages fell. this creates the same net effect to the average person, but it’s structurally different. due to ongoing automation (which has actually started since 1900) wages have gone down continuously (in real terms, but not nominally because inflation outpaced that decline). meanwhile, for some expenses such as housing, the real prices have not gone down as quickly, therefore we see a net increase of the ratio of housing prices to wages.

• another issue seems to me that the american public (and unfortunately also large parts of the european public) have been convinced that they need “more” - that they need bigger houses, cars, etc.

the consequence is that new houses are bigger, and therefore more expensive.

unfortunately true. this whole gender issue has been used as a huuge distraction scheme from the economic situation and other urgent issues.

oh very interesting. i’ve been wanting to get into the details of how federation actually works, and i wanted to figure out why mastodon<->lemmy federation does often not seem to work. but i guess that’s a deep rabbit hole too!

well sounds to me like deaths from toxic emissions sank by roughly 60% from 2008 to 2017. it’s not “almost down to zero” in that time frame but a lot has happened between 1960 and 2008 too.

uh i think there’s a lemmy setting to hide all bot posts (that are marked as bot posts obviously), it’s a client-side setting.

there’s no automated way to stop LLMs except trying to stop all bots (assuming they all are using the API, and the LLMs don’t communicate any self identifying metadata).

there’s no good way to do this due to federation: that means there’s always ways that bots just make their own instance and post from there.

for me it’s not that i think that i shouldn’t, but i can’t. i just cannot ingest that much sugar at once, i get really bad feelings from that!

if you’re on linux, you can do sudo apt update and then sudo apt install minetest to install it, then you should get a start menu entry called “Luanti” and just click that to launch.

(it could be that the package is called luanti on your system instead of minetest, depending on what repository you use. they renamed it at some time.)

you can do singleplayer, multiplayer (local area network only), and multiplayer (over the internet).

all three of them don’t require you to get an “official account” or sth. singleplayer and multiplayer (local) are very easy to set up, you’ll figure it out in less than 1 minute.

multiplayer (over the internet) requires a bit more technical knowledge. are you familiar with the linux command line, and have you ever rented a linux server before?

there’s a list of publicly-visible servers on the luanti multiplayer screen. maybe it’s one of them?

The only reason I try it out is to get an understanding how these games work and to have some basic knowledge of one of the most important and played games of all time.

understandable. in this game (mineclonia which is exactly the same as minecraft, content-wise) you collect resources and turn them into something else, quite a lot how real world (industry) works. there’s two types of raw resources: renewable and non-renewable resources. renewable means stuff like plants (yes, you can plant and harvest crops. use a hoe on a patch of dirt to turn it into farmland, then you can plant seeds there. they grow after a while) and animals (cows, chickens, etc which you can feed with grains etc) and monsters (these spawn in the environment, they can harm you if they touch you for example but you can kill them with a sword and they drop loot like zombie flesh, bones, spider eyes etc which are useful for some recipes).

and then there’s non-renewable resources which you can dug up from under the ground. stuff like raw iron ore, which you can then “cook” (smelt) in a furnace to get processed iron ingot, which you can then use in a lot of recipes to turn into other things, such as railways, wagons, pistons, etc.

there’s quite a lot of content actually but these are the basics.

i’ve played luanti for a while and loved it! it’s really neat and has a lot of potential. i’ve even gone to write a custom modpack for it.
