Germany does not need the same new fighter jets as France, Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Wednesday, signalling that Berlin could abandon a flagship joint defence project for Europe.

Merz is a failure as a chancellor, Germany was “ok” before him now he’s steering it into a precipice that will cause the country to need years of recovery.

Merz is an idiot, but at the same time it is completly dumb to spend a lot of German money to let the French develop a fighter jet designed for the French military. It does not create jobs in Germany at all and comes with the risk of the entire thing failing, which would not even give Germany a proper fighter.

Germany is a large enough customer to be able to set up a local production line or even develop its own jet using a bunch of parts available from France or GCAP.

The smart thing would be to collaborate… I am no expert, but I don’t see any reason why a fighter jet for France should be any different than one for Germany.

Just make one big European army and let the big players have one branch. German tanks, French infantry, British boats, Scandinavian planes and so on

A beer holder and a baguette holder for the pilots are very different, complicated mechanical parts…
