Well, obviously if you host from your home ISP, people will be able to figure out your home’s approximate location via a reverse IP search.
But otherwise go for it. It’s not that hard to do and a nice learning experience.
Seems to confirm what I said. And Germany is literally discussing non-defense spending infrastructure projects that aid defense projects right now, so this isn’t much different from what those experts are saying about China.
There are generalized benefits from learning a language that will make it easier to learn other languages. But which language doesn’t really matter, and learning a dead or artificial language might have some theoretical benefits in that regard, but in practical terms you will learn less of it as there is less material to practice on and in general the motivation to learn a language you can barely use will be low for most people.
I personally think it is more worthwhile to spend learning another EU language. The general benefit of better understanding how languages work will be the same, but you end up with a practical language skill. I am a bit tired of the argument anyways, having had to learn Latin with the exact same argument and it was a complete waste of time.
Yes, but EU defense spending now is a hundred billion higher and is projected to increase by another hundred billion by 2027. That double of what China is currently spending, and AFAIK they don’t have plans to increase it by that much.
Do you not think there are some problems that arise from assymetry in ability to learn English?
Since the UK left (and Ireland and Malta being the only ones left speaking English natively I think) this problem got less problematic. If it is a foreign language almost for all, the differences are not that big.
Artificial languages have the problem that they will end up being spoken only by an elite, which would be highly problematic for the EU, which is already seen as an elite project by all too many people in the EU.
Now add all the EU defense spending together. But yes, China is trying to catch up, which isn’t great either.
Those French overseas colonies would probably benefit from more independence, yes, but if you have an actual military base there or an ally that wants you to be there, you don’t need navy ships capable of operational multi-month independence either. That is really only needed if operating in hostile territory far away from home, and IMHO we don’t need that.
The EU defense spending is already massive, easily outclassing everyone but the US.
The problem is on what the money is spend on, as much is wasted to national white elephants or transferred to unreliable US defense companies.
And in general way too much is spend on global force projection tech. There is for example no need for the EU to have a navy fleet that can operate independently for many months in the Pacific.
Please try linking the original source next time.
Anyways, this article seems to have more details: https://www.bluewin.ch/en/news/international/drone-wall-possible-within-a-year-2618896.html
Well, there is a huge difference between an officially state run news agency, a genuine Chinese source like the newspaper linked above (obviously not independent), and covert propaganda efforts.
Not seeing that difference is naive and group-think to ban anything with a relationship to a foreign govermment also doesn’t help.
And anyways, this kind of propaganda is among the least worse, as it is pretty obvious and doesn’t hide its intentions.
There is a difference between propaganda (which is usually true but with omissions and spins), and “missinformation” (like for example posting false personal details about an attacker in the immediate aftermath to spurr racial hatred), and no the above is not “the worst of”, but it seems the kind you especially don’t like 🤷
And please don’t make accusations without backing that up with actual links. I am not aware of offending anyone here in this community, and it certainly wasn’t intentional.
I didn’t get offensive, but yes I noticed a certain group-think here when it comes to such things. But that is why places like lemmy.ml that enforce similar group-think via moderation actions are worse than what we are trying to do here.
The argument was more nuanced. Using moderation to suppress differing opinions (which, yes, tend to be influenced by propaganda), usually just results in people switching to pure propaganda bubbles, which is much worse.
Pointing out here in the comments that SCMP is a Chinese propaganda outlet is fine. That way even people unaware of it previously can come to their own conclusions.
It’s one of the few English speaking sources from China. That fact alone makes it already clear that it is a propaganda outlet mostly aimed at foreigners, but if you are aware of that, it can be a legitimate source to see how the Chinese government wants to spin a certain topic in the eyes of a foreign audience.
This is odd because I know a few mainland Chinese people that use XMPP without problems (and afaik without a VPN).
Sounds like your server got blocked for another reason?
Well, instead of leaking metadata to Signal, AWS, Cloudflare, Google/Apple and your ISP, like Signal does, RCS only leaks it to your ISP /s
You can easily redirect xmpp to port 443 which is not blocked by most firewalls. If you have problems with firewalls or public wifis your xmpp server is misconfigured.
The actual military grade (xmpp based) messengers implement security lables, meaning messages are tagged with the required security clearance and if you invite random people to a chat they can’t see the messages.
The base consumer models from regular brands usually have no write cache and are thus cheaper, and obviously slower, but for data storage that doesn’t matter so much.
But you can also look into 2.5" HDDs if you are looking for power savings and noise reduction over regular HDDs.
