It’s so frustrating they are using people making dumb mistakes to advance the plot. The kids I can give a pass because kids are dumb. But to have actual scientists and engineers do stupid stuff repeatedly to keep things moving is so cheap and lazy. And the supposedly trillion dollar company running extremely important tests on alien species in an isolated island has worse security than a standard office building. Here’s a list:

    Tap for spoiler
    • Wiping the memory of one of the hybrids and literally just dropping her off like nothing happened. Not informing anyone she will interact with. Not monitoring her status to see the effects. Of course someone will notice immediately that something is wrong and she will realize it quickly. Your goal was to erase the trauma, but you’re just giving her a new one.
    • Scientist looks obviously at the camera before “sneakily” passing information to the brother via his computer screen. Can you be any more obvious that you’re doing something suspicious?
    • They fired the scientist on obviously bad terms, then let him continue to roam around the facility with access to everything. Even standard white collar companies immediately disable access of terminated employees and have security walk them out. Lamest security system and protocols for such a company. They have cameras all around and somehow no one is monitoring them.
    • Same scientist goes into the lab where the aliens are and proceeds to not do anything about closing all the doors that contain the specimens. I get it, the hybrids are like his own children, but dude, there are literally dangerous creatures all around you. It’s not like the kid is gonna get any worse than the condition you found him in.

Yeah, for a compound and facility as secure and high tech as that one, it sure does allow for a whole bunch of operator risk and error. I did find the series of completely avoidable and downright stupid containment fumbles a bit annoying.

All I can say is the universe has always had stupid smart people making stupid decisions… they lean heavily on the corruption of corporations for most of it, but the aliens universe was always about that… and the trope is tolerable for that I say.

I get it. But to have it be the plot mover literally every episode is just bad.

I don’t disagree with you, I just expect it cause they do horrible science always. First movie they let him back on board, 2nd movie was just action schlock but they still tried to save embryos, 3rd was heavily rewritten but they tried to snag Ripley, 4th… was yeah, but clones! Prequels involved taking off masks to get infected and… well I honestly don’t remember prequel 2. Then we have the newest prequel where there was a group of non scientists so not hashing on them really… then this with the “boy genius” which is just a rich kid who inflated his own ego and cares little with science following suit for the series.

In Covenant they didn’t even bother having masks to take off on the unexplored planet.

The worst part is keeping all the different dangerous aliens in one fucking room. Just to make sure that if one escapes, they all have a chance to escape !

This wasn’t something they’d ever thought they’d do, they resisted it, there were no protocols in place for memory wipes. This was the middle manager in-between the kid genius and the scientists mistake.

Then they all the more should’ve been cautious with observing and monitoring her after the wipe. Not just bring her back to her room and let her interact with just anyone, who obviously will immediately notice there’s a gap in her memory. Hell, they could’ve just lied and told the other hybrids that something malfunctioned and caused the memory issue.

Maybe that’s what the guy who was fired would’ve done. The woman who remains just had her husband fired (which means she’ll not be able to see him for years since she’s going to stay on the island working, or maybe they’ll get a divorce as a result) and she had already been physically threatened by the hybrid and is now shown to be scared of them (going to the emergency button when Wendy confronts her).

Yes, I completely agree. It’s an issue that plagued many of the films, so I sort of it expected it going in, but the writing is quite good in other areas so for them to approach the horror sections so lazily is very disappointing.

When it happened to the kid, I actually thought “hey that’s a clever reference to one of the biggest problems of this franchise over the years” because it was exactly the kind of lazy/dumb approach they always take, but this time it made complete sense because it was a child desperate to impress, not disappoint, his mentor. I was reminded of when I was around his age and did a few days of work experience in a veterinary clinic. There was one afternoon when I made a mistake on a simple task and was so determined to avoid embarrassing myself and asking for help that I just blundered on and ended up wasting hundreds of dollars worth of medicine.

Then this moron adult walks in and ruins it. So frustrating.
