I wonder if privately it was. He mentions twice the amount of work, possibly because he’s recovering.

The setup from Hawkeye season 1 was definitely a passing of the torch, but maybe Renner isn’t ready to fully pass it. We know Kate is an expert with her bow, but maybe she still needs help figuring out the spy and investigation stuff. Maybe the plan was for Clint to be more “guy in the chair” (hence the reduced pay), but this article is meant to be more, “I’m not retired yet”.

They might have been trying to increase the amount of episodes. That’s what they did with Walking Dead. Fired the guy who directed season 1, increased the amount of episodes for season 2 and reduced the budget.

Which is insane, because Hawkeye is like one of the most profitable shows to make. The CG for arrows is nothing, and they can set the next season in any city in the world, or like on a farm. Shit, it could be Toronto, and then they wouldn’t have to pretend that Toronto is some other city. It’s well written and the cast is very good, but has hardly any A-listers. Renner could just be like a mentor phoning it in from a central command while Young (cheap) Avengers run small-time missions in abandoned warehouses. Maybe he’s charged with training Kamala and Kate and Isaiah and Riri and White Vision and Skar and maybe things get multi-versal with America Chavez and we get Wiccan and Speed and Kid Loki and Iron Lad. And then the new Guardians show up and we get Groot and Adam Warlock and Phyla Vell and Rocket and maybe Nova.

Pack that shit into a series and it basically writes itself.
