    Driving the Tanami Track.

It is one of the more remote roads in the world. Beautiful in its own way.

Can be 400-500km from emergency services. And 250km from shops. Hot and dusty.

    –

Last year, driving north we saw a couple who had rolled their car, 100km from the nearest town. Very minor injuries, but one with an epilepsy diagnosis.

We were the first vehicle they had seen, in the 2 hours since the time of accident.

Transferred them and belongings to the nearest hospital 350km away.

    vigilantism.

it’s one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself and your community but simultaneously the dumbest most dangerous thing you can do to yourself.

you will be hit, shot at, stabbed, maced, tazed, and chased. all in the name of personal justice that a government refuses to comply with.

your targets will be released. they will not serve time. they will commit crimes again, and I will be there.

    don’t do it.

3d printing. It’s essentially process engineering or manufacturing engineering but hobby level. It will go wrong and you will be frustrated and it will take experimentation and thought to figure it out. (it’s better now than years ago, things have drastically improved.) if you don’t like fiddling with things, do do 3d printing. For me? I freaking love it. I love fixing printing mistakes or whatever. Solving problems is wonderful.

    Guns.

I like sport shooting at ranges and the historical context. For instance, I have a non-sporterised Lee-Enfield that was used to shoot Nazis.

However, firearms should only be owned by folks that have the training and level of responsibility to use them safely.

I’m in a committed lifelong relationship that I intend to be faithful in, and I don’t think she wants to do such activities. I’m trying my best to make it happen as much as possible between just the two of us lol. It’s not easy with school and work and two kids.

    Sports cars.

You can get them at reasonable price. But damn, they’re expensive to maintain, and you pay more taxes and insurance on them.

If you can fit in a Miata (and fit your ego into one), that’s all anyone needs from a sports car really. They’re fun on the road and the racetracks are lousy with them. Cheap to buy and maintain. Drive a Miata. Buy a homely one if you have to. Just drive it.

Deadlock. I feel like you need experience in maybe 3 genres of games before you can understand the concept well, and then it’s a sizable time commitment. I adore it, but that’s a pretty steep entry fee.

I think that’s the best part about the game. They didn’t make a game for everyone. They made this ultra specific game that looks amazing, it is funny, it has hundreds of thousand voicelines. The movment is the best i have ever seen in a game. It’s complicated as fuck, the later you start playing, the more characters you have to learn. But still, they cracked over 200k players last week after the update, and it is still invite only. I really enjoy my time right now, because i feel like we’re in the good old times right now, before it goes public and the lootboxes roll out.

The Fediverse. I can’t be bothered explaining what the Fediverse is or how it works or how it differs from traditional social media. I can’t be bothered recommending browser add-ons that correct issues that might not actually be ‘issues’ to the person in question. And even if I did all that, there’s a 1/100 chance they’ll actually care enough to try it, and an even smaller chance still that they’ll stick with it. I don’t even tell people that the memes I send them are from Lemmy, because I can’t be bothered with the follow-up questions. My parents, for example, who use Facebook exclusively, could not be paid enough to even try the Fedi equivalent (Friendica). The average person doesn’t care about their private data being sold or the behaviour of tech CEOs or the abuse of their psyches by algorithms, so there’s no reason for them to go to the pain of learning an entirely new ecosystem that’s less ‘good’ but requires more effort. The average person simply wants AI-generated images of lions with racist anti-immigrant slogans printed under them, and Facebook is unbeatable in that regard. I just can’t be bothered. Plus, I like that it’s comparatively less crowded here. Let Facebook keep their race rioters!

Yeah I can’t be bothered to do that either. I post links from Lemmy, people ask “whats this?” I say “its Lemmy, like a reddit thing but different” if they are interested after that, I just tell them to go in and click things, maybe make a account and see if it keeps their interest. I’d say 1 out of every 30 people are interested enough to make a account but not sure how many of them stay active. Maybe 1 in 100 lol.

    Path of Exile.

In my opinion it is one of the best games ever made but the learning curve is so insane I don’t feel comfortable blanket recommending the game. Now it has been ~3 years since I last played and I heard the game is more beginner friendly these days but it still sounds rough.

I’d recommend the game if you have a friend or friends to play with or know someone who plays who can show you the ropes. If you want to be frustrated, but want a game with insane depth then go ahead and play it blind.

It’s one of those games that is designed and curated for the top 10 or maybe even 1% of players of the games. It’s crafted for the die hard fans. It’s an amazing game. But it’s also completely unapproachable for 99% of people.

Also, yes, I know Path of Exile 2 is more beginner friendly but IMO Path of Exile 2 isn’t as good as Path of Exile. At least for the time being.

    • Path of Exile is good for like, one season (do they still do seasons?). I got super into it for a while, then took a break, and when I came back I was forced to respec my character. So I dropped it for a while and came back and had to respec my character again. I won’t pick it up again because I don’t want to re figure out what the hell my build was and respec all over again just to pick up where I left off.

I think most players play the league which only lasts like 3 to 4 months before it resets and then move on to the next league. I think the most I’ve played is 3 leagues consecutively. When ai play though I go all out which is very disruptive to my life and it also gives me burn out so I then have to quit for a while.

    Meal prepping the same lunch.

Been doing this for over a decade now. Minor variations in veggies, switched from chicken to beans and rice about a year ago. I love it. Very affordable and I never have to think about lunch.

I’ve had a co-worker call me a “bad man” when I told him I just eat the same thing everyday. I get it tho, people need to change things up. But for me as long as it has nutrients and doesn’t taste bad I genuinely don’t care that it’s exactly the same.

Yeah, dinner is where I get variety, as are all weekend meals. On weekdays breakfast is the same quick and easy meal, and lunch is the same easy to throw together the night before meal. On rare occasions I’ll switch it up for a time or change the meal, but it’s been a few years of lunch being the same.

It’s fine, sure I’d love more variety, and if I retire I’ll probably never fall back to this meal again. But I appreciate the fact that I don’t have to think or plan or anything.

1 bag frozen corn, 2 green/red/yellow peppers, refried black beans from a can, rice with a packet of taco seasoning thrown in for flavor, and a grilled sweet onion. Split across 5 glass Tupperware containers.

Used to do broccoli, brussel sprouts, mushrooms for a little while, but the corn, peppers and onion keep really well. Its that last meal on Friday that could sometimes get questionable lol

I wish I was like this. I grew up on a lot of the same meals over and over because my mom worked her ass off and didn’t have time to cook fresh all the time. Now I can’t stand having to eat the same meal even twice in a week. It wasn’t so bad when I was less busy but now I am busy and feel exhausted when I have to think of new meals to make.

Right?! I love a good time-intensive meal now again, but other things can be nice too. If I can make 7 days of food in the time it takes to make 1 day of unique meals, that frees a dozen hours to do something else. I can wait until Christmas to try that 5 hour lasagne recipie. Meanwhile I can focus on what’s important… like shitpost comments
