For what it’s worth, 160 is a record, but it’s not that far outside the norm. In 2024, corrupt piece of shit Eric Adams announced 147 car-free streets. In 2025, same administration, it was 148. The Trick-or-Streets program has been running for only five years now, so it’s understandable it’d still be ramping up in scale.
NYC mayor’s office press releases like these from every administration are puff pieces intended to be read uncritically (if at all), but I’m glad the trend is going upward.
Thanks for the context.
Meanwhile, trunk-or-treat continues to sweep the rest of the nation 🤢🤮
Trunk or Treat is such an abomination.
growing up outside of town and spending my teenage years getting to many of my friend’s houses in much more rural places, I do understand how trunk or treat could come about and make sense. hell, we used to get driven around from house to house in the country sometimes.
what I don’t understand is when it’s done in suburbia
Now I imagine in the country you can at least blow up pumpkins at midnight to make up for having to trunk or treat.
for us at that age, it was an awful lot of hide-and-seek in the woods. makes for a long scary game when you’ve got 10-20 kids spread out over a dozen acres.
Its so bizarre seeing the origin of such practices. Like i see how offroad vehicles, car based pasttimes, etc would make sense in the geeat wilderness but then the average person who has a pickup is joe, 45, who lives in suburbia and works as middle management for an office supplies company.
I thought you just made that up. What is it?
Folks gather at a parking lot (I think generally at a church or a school) and the kids go from car to car instead of house to house.
If you don’t want your kid going around the neighborhood for, I don’t know, reasons I guess.
Oh god, that is so sad
Imagine if you took away most of the fun of Halloween, while keeping the purest most consumerist elements only (costumes from Disney IP and candy), and inserting religion, and pretty deliberately eroding (smaller the community the easier) the idea that Halloween is anything other than that, ruining the neighborhood’s ability to enjoy it en masse by removing the literal kiddos for whom and around which the whole thing ought to revolve.
It’s the kinda stuff we’re doin’ in a nutshell. Replacing anything decent that remains with a thin (always weirdly fearful/hateful) plastic shell, shaped almost like the thing, but the cheapest thinnest imitation of it, almost like a…
Well, you get it.
Fuck trunk or treat. May it be rightfully seen as the final true graveyard of “fun” culturally available to US children. Fittingly, the tombstones themselves, trunks of cars, rolling in on amazing loans, and parked, in lines, in church lots. Opened like caskets for the weirdest, grossest wake.
Everyfuckingwhere.
That’s weird. I thought it’d be driving to rich neighborhoods and filling your trunk.
A potato farmer in Idaho is furious now
A “Jesus loving” potato farmer in Idaho is furious now.
I wanna feel all the hypocrisy lol
