  • I looked at the real paper (linked in the article) and I am interpreting it a bit different. What I’m seeing is that the ‘right’ didnt move much further to the right because they’ve always supported racist, patriarchal fascism - they just have the means to actually do it now rather than just think about it and make incremental moves toward it. The movement towards the left coincides pretty well with smartphones + high speed internet, which allowed many people to see the rest of the world in real-time for the first time. This more ‘global conciousness’ can shift attitudes to the left because it peers through the veil of US propaganda. These are just my first interpretations though - I could be wrong. I try to give the benefit of the doubt to those who do the work to write peer reviewed papers (i don’t give a shit about the website article though).

  • When you say ‘Taiwan is the original government’, what year are we talking here? [I am actually interested in a history discussion, I’m not trying to just be contentious] My understanding is that the current gov is only ~70 yrs old and is the remnants of the RoC. The RoC fled the mainland after losing the civil war to the commies, and then they took over the island and instituted martial law for like decades and tried to erase the indigenous peoples culture. Before that it was ruled by Japan at one point, mainland China at one point, and the Dutch at another point, i think Portugeuse were there for awhile. I dont think there was ever a united, one island government formed by the indigenous peoples. I’m not saying that Taiwan should welcome China with open arms - not at all- I’m questioning the support of their current government. As i finish writing this paragraph, I’m thinking I need to do some reading on the socioeconomics of modern Taiwan…
