Space and evolution are my biggest interests outside of that, though

DearOldGrandma@lemmy.worldto Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•If you live in Seattle, PLEASE go to Pike Place Market and buy Apples 🍏English10·2 months agoWhich is ridiculous. Most rational people who have been to Pike Place know you shouldn’t drive there if it’s remotely busy. I remember, a few times, seeing a few tourists in cars get stuck in the crowds when I was there for work.

But many people don’t do those and end up increasing their life expectancy but with terrible joints. Elliptical machines solve the issue by forcing your body to actually run properly but they eliminate the shocks that come with each step. And you’re right - swimming is by far the best cardio anyone can do. Plus everyone needs to learn how to swim.
Sadly I can’t do either for now, but hoping to by next Spring.

I never thought I’d miss it this much. One of the biggest things I’ve been wanting to do for the past few years is to just run for the hell of it. You never realize how fortunate you are to do something until it’s taken from you.

When the financial security and physical health of people are compromised, they’re less likely to be progressive.
DearOldGrandma@lemmy.worldto politics @lemmy.world•What Caused Democrats’ No-Show Problem in 2024?14·4 months agoThe fact is that non-voters either have more important things to do than vote or don’t feel they’d make an impact if they did vote.
When countries, states, and localities encourage education, promote mental and physical well-being, provide ample opportunities and fallbacks for financial security, and make it convenient to vote, then people more likely to at least vote, and at most vote progressively.
Scarcity promotes apathy, which promotes conservatism.

This isn’t the issue you should worry about in this context.

- The demographics of people who live within a few miles of golf courses. Are they wealthier with better Healthcare, allowing them to live long enough to develop Alzheimer’s?
- Were pesticides used heavily in the golf courses surveyed?
As with all statistics, more data = context.
There are those of us who studied economics who aren’t brainwashed by Friedman and the like. But the US has proven for decades that it would prefer greed and individualism to influence policy rather than actual economic theory.
