The meeting also appears to have opened the way for a formal reset in Ukrainian-Syrian relations.

Ukraine and Syria have agreed to restore diplomatic relations after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa in New York, reopening ties that had been broken under Syria’s previous leadership.

The two countries first established diplomatic relations in 1992, but Syria cut them in 2022 after Bashar al-Assad’s government recognized the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk republics.

Zelenskyy stated the sides agreed to rebuild relations on mutual respect and trust, while Ukraine also expressed readiness to support Syrians on their path to stability.
