Haiti has no president or elected officials. Instead, an expensive nine-member presidential council holds power without oversight or accountability.

Without help with active sabotage from the West.

Edit: To everyone asking what I’m talking about: Aside from France bleeding the country dry, the US occupied it until 1934 and controlled its budget until 1947 when it finally paid off its “debt” to France. Whatever chance Haitians might’ve had at a decent life before 2050 was crushed by France and America, leaving it in a worse position than even African post-colonial states. And yes, the effects of colonialism do last that long; just look at Africa. America and France have a responsibility to fix the mess they created in Haiti.

      What active sabotage?

This is conspiracy theory level thinking. The “West” very much wants the situation to stabilise. They might not be willing to contribute enough resources, but that’s the same thing as actively wanting Haiti to be ruled by gangs.

Not denying the historical commentary w.r.t. colonialism. It’s still a conspiracy theory to think that western countries currently want Haiti to be unstable and be run by gangs.

As I mentioned elsewhere in this thread, they might not want to bear the financial burden (I would speculate you need several billion USD a year for security and institution building), but it’s not like they actively benefit from Haiti being unstable.

That being said, I am open to alternative commentary from someone living there (unfortunately I’ve never been to Haiti).

That’s true, I meant that Haiti was historically actively sabotaged—rather than simply neglected—by the West. In hindsight I should’ve worded that differently.

I haven’t heard of this (outside of whatever happened 200 years ago). Which western nations are doing what?

Outside of what happened 200 years ago? You think no one’s been fucking with Haiti since then? America has invaded Haiti since then. Brother read up on the history of Haiti. It’s basically been a shit show for the last 200 years.

Oh, that part isn’t directly the West’s fault beyond historical responsibility. I meant to say that Western sabotage, not just neglect, is what led to Haiti’s present state, not that they’re being sabotaged right now. I should’ve worded that better.
