all at once on a single day is easier to organise and more impact will be shown - it’s more concentrated. But yes, obviously long term everyone has to permanently come off the drugs apps permanently.

Talk about doing the bare minimum! That’ll show em! I literally haven’t used corporate social media since 2016. Ask big tech about how much I’m hurting their bottom line.

please share it with your friends and family who are not so on the case with this kind of stuff. This strike is aimed at the mainstream.

lol - yes, people in this community will be way beyond this. The idea is to share it with your friends and family who are not there yet.

I appreciate the idea, but this “Attention Strike” for a single day will have clearly insignificant impact on tech services. It’s like expecting a 4 hours long national protest to do any damage on the economy. I already don’t use social media at all most of the days.

For an impact to be present it should last at least for a month. Not so hard to put in place, there are lots of people already doing some form of absteinance on november for no reason, there is pride month, there is christmas month, just need to tell em to reduce/stop using social media for this month (eg. November)

It’s by reducing their daily usage of social media for a month that people will understand they can keep this routine even out of that month, and thus reducing effectively their revenue for the companies.

a month would be a big ask for fully addicted mainstream types. this is a baby steps thing - people in this community will be way beyond this. The idea is to share it with your friends and family who are not there yet.

this sounds like the american farce from not long ago where they wouldn’t buy from Wallmart for a whole day to topple the regime.
      Viva la revolucion!

One days starvation won’t even show up their monthly analytics

Not to be a mood killer, but most of us are here because we didn’t like what Reddit was turning it to. Especially and personally since 2023 where they started charging for their API use. This was not a 24 hour pause, or insignificant symbolic action. This is people actively leaving the platform. Yet their active user count has risen ever since

Can we get a list of what counts as “Big Tech?” Lemmy is already my only social media and I don’t use any messengers outside of Signal and Simplex. Are we talking classical Silicon Valley (FAANG)? Chromium browsers? Anything at all on an iPhone or Android? What about game platforms?

    This is so vague.

I’d like to know too. I bet most Lemmy users are here because we got sick of Reddit, which I consider part of big tech. I’ll participate in this strike as much as I can, but not because I saw this post, it’s just how I want to live my life. I think a lot of Lemmy users share similar goals, so this post may be preaching to the choir, and if it’s not, a 1 day strike on “big tech” won’t show results.

I don’t use any of their apps normally… except Google maps (cause of family location sharing). I’ll stop that for a day

Sometimes I still watch youtube on my TV because it’s doomed as a shared family resource anyways. I could just not that day and play games offline.

Now, I’m no mathematician, but what is going on with their math? If you’re asking people to give it up for 24 hours, why minimize the reclaimed hours by only counting 4 per person?

“That’s reclaiming 312 hours from big tech’s control. If 1000 people signed up, we could save 24,000 hours.”

I mean this seems really unserious. They make money off data, stop giving the creeps your data – that is the only way to do anything different.

that’s the idea - to educate people that attention is money for big tech and to withold it for a strike. it’s a drop in the ocean, but it at least gets people thinking along the terms of the business model. the next strike should be way bigger. please share with your less enlighted friends and family.
