Picked one up last year for $35? Some generic Chinese brand; CD/DVD reader/writer. Haven’t had any issues with it.
I mean find one that fits your budget? They’re cheap and there is no “good” one. They’ll all do the job, reads a disc. I got a random one sitting in a drawer for those just in cases I got off ebay a few years back. It just does the job when needed.
AFAIK and IME, most of the cheap ones Just Work™. At least on Linux, would be unusual if that wasn’t true on other operating systems.
My Verbatim brand one has been working great for… well, at least a decade at this point. Plug and play. It does need two USB ports, though.
If you are planning on creating legal backups of physical media, you may be restricted in what drives are suitable.
BluRay drives may have copy protection that is not able to be bypassed without custom firmware, specialist software and decryption codes.
Some DVDs are also obfuscated so they can’t be read by a computer; to the point where they can’t even play on some DVD players.
That’s what MakeMKV is for.
