Maybe his writing should have been less disappointing.
the problem with Doctor Who and especially its fanbase is if your Doctor isn’t 10 or 11 and the companion isn’t Rose or Amy then they’re not going to like it. oh they’ll watch, but they won’t like it and they’ll whine and whine about it.
Everything prior to 10 just didn’t exist to them. everything after 11 was “wrong”. the showrunners tried to pander to them and they were lambasted for it.
“You want a queer Doctor? we hear you!”
“ok, but not THAT Doctor”
“ooook how about a female doctor?”
“ok, but not THAT Doctor”
“an old doctor like the classics?”
“ewwww no one watched those”
The fanbase would be happier than a pig in shit if they just constantly brought back Tennat and Smith and made one of them Gay and made Amy Pond the Doctor. and just rehash that over and over. then they’d be happy.
I don’t know if I agree. The Whittaker era (also the Chibnall era) wasn’t great.
Eccleston kicked off a new era. Tennant gave us pure gold. Smith somehow kept it going. But by the end of the Smith run the cracks started showing. Capaldi gave us a refresh, but ultimately Russel T Davies and Stephen Moffat just needed to take a break. Chibnall was a good idea in theory, but it just didn’t work.
I took a break from watching early in the Chibnall run. Watching it years later it wasn’t so bad, but it needed to be excellent and it was just ok.
Davies coming back after some time off was great. There are still some bad episodes and I think the finale was a mess (but that in part comes from clearly planning for three seasons and only getting two).
Right now we’re in a rut because we ended on such a downer. A whimper of a finale, a weird twist and no planned future.
We know a different ending was shot. I say retcon the last episode. You can even do it in universe because the whole story is about alternate realities/futures. Schedule around Ncuti and give him one last proper sendoff season. Give Davies his last season. Then either give it to someone new or if Moffat wants back, go for it.
