3·4 months agoQuestion is how “real” that support is - firmware updates matter and depend mostly on the chip manufacturer’s support.

Linux@lemmy.ml•How often do I have to buy a new pixel if I fully degoogle with GrapheneOS? A support question
6·4 months agoBy 8 years old even the newest devices will be out of software support and using EOL phones is not a particularly great idea for security. GOS’s security focus goes out the window if you use an old version with known vulnerabilities.

Linux@lemmy.ml•How often do I have to buy a new pixel if I fully degoogle with GrapheneOS? A support question
20·4 months agoYou can probably expect GOS support as long as Google supports the device, that is the main limitation. For the newer Pixels that is promised to be 7 years after release.
Going by this table, Pixel 6 is currently the oldest to get full GOS updates
That matches Google’s software support

Programming@programming.dev•Literature review on the benefits of static types, by Dan Luu
3·6 months agoThat is a consequence of having parallelism - all mainstream pre-Rust memory safe languages with parallelism suffer from this issue, they are still generally regarded as memory safe. I don’t know where you got that Java does not have this issue, you need to know to use the parallelism-safe data types where necessary.

Programming@programming.dev•Literature review on the benefits of static types, by Dan Luu
3·6 months agoHow is Go not memory safe? Having escape hatches does not count, all the safe languages have those.
Yep, reinvent it for educational purposes and then burn it with fire.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Can we please, PLEASE for gods sake just all agree that arch is not and will never be a good beginner distro no matter how many times you fork it?
0·10 months agoI’m not sure what a flatpak version could possibly do any better than the version I use.
The official OBS flatpak supports more codecs and integrations than some distro packages.
Stability is also a factor, especially on rolling or cutting edge distros. Fedora RPM release of Blender did not work for me at all with an nvidia GPU, for example.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Can we please, PLEASE for gods sake just all agree that arch is not and will never be a good beginner distro no matter how many times you fork it?
0·10 months agoAFAIK no systemd -> no flatpak -> don’t recommend to newbs. Say what you will about flatpak, but it is the official distribution method for some popular pieces of software and large GUI software generally works better through it (in my experience) - think Blender, GIMP etc.
All the core tools are actually a single executable with many symlinks to it, which makes the distro very compact. This makes it very nice as a base for Docker images.

Sure thing, bud 😂
It even recognized the local app that matches, how on earth is this a better match
