The job of the patent office is to determine whether that’s a valid patent application or not. As in, can you actually patent that thing, has someone else already patented it etc. As long as it’s technically valid, it gets approved. It’s up to the patent holder to test if its actually useful or not. If they choose to build the thing IRL, it’s up to the courts to determine if that breaks any laws. Every step along the way, the general public is there to judge the moral integrity of said invention, but usually that has no impact on the validity of the patent. Depending on jurisdiction, the patent office may need to follow some moral guielines, but the threshold of rejection is very high. My guess is, you won’t be able to patent a gas chamber for exterminating “illegal immigrants”, but patenting wild Meta BS is technically fine.

Yeah, I guess we need a third category then. What they’re currently doing involves overproduction at first, but that is later turned into artificial scarcity by destroying the products. How’s “extra wasteful, diabolical scarcity” for a term?

And the decision is always guided by greed and complete disregard for sustainability.

Soon will be a good time to quit YT completely. Suddenly, you’ll have lots of time to do all the things you were supposed to do long ago. You know like taking a walk, cooking nice food, reading books, getting to bed early etc.

Here’s an idea. Instead of having artificial scarcity, they could have actual scarcity. Don’t manufacture 10 000 super fancy shirts. Make only 500. They will run out sooner than anyone wants, you’ll still make absurd profits and customers are left wanting more. When the next season rolls around, you make 500 of the same shirt, but in a different color. Charge 2x more than last time, but you’ll be able to sell them anyway now that people know how fast they disappeared last time.

Side note: Making stuff to feed the vanity of millionaires is revolting, but at least this way it doesn’t have to be so wasteful.

That was the longest movie experience I’ve ever had. I started watching it on Saturday, finished on Sunday. For every 1 minute of going forward in the movie, I must have spent more than 2 minutes writing notes, watching YT explanations. I also had to jump back and re-watch older parts to understand the 1 minute I’ve just gone forward in the plot. Maybe all of that jumping around adds up to watching the whole thing 3 times. 😅

I guess I’ll need to put Coherence and Primer on my watch list then.

While watching Tenet, I quickly realized I can’t watch this movie in the normal way. Subtitles were obligatory, but the plot is such a labyrinth that you’ll get lost in no time. I ended up taking notes and referring to some videos that explain what’s actually going on. I also had to jump around the timeline many times. While “watching” the movie that way, I ended up spending several hours. A simple two hour movie became a two day project.

Yes, I know I’m doing it wrong. You’re supposed to just watch it the usual way, be super confused, watch it again, be a little less confused etc. After watching it about 10 times you’ll probably understand what’s going on. If you don’t use subtitles, even 20 times won’t be enough.

Yep. Dialogue should be loud enough that you can comfortably follow the plot without making your ears bleed. Gunfire and music makes that a bit tricky though. Those should be toned down, but I can see why they’re so loud all the time. Most likely many directors want to make the movie feel more impactful and intense, so they just do it by cranking up the volume those other things.

I recall seeing a setting in VLC that adjusts volume automatically. Can’t remember wat it was called though.

They’re just backup copies hosted in the Galactic Museum. There’s no way a species that stupid would survive long enough to invent FTL travel. Just surviving the nuclear era was borderline miraculous.

If you need a handful of plugins to make a site tolerable, there’s probably something terribly wrong with that place. We can keep on patching it with an ever growing list of plugins, but is it really worth it.

If they’re interested in tinkering, the starting point doesn’t really matter that much. Just let the refugee know that distrohopping is allowed. If you hear that some new distro has an awesome feature, give it a go.

If we’re talking about a person who hates tinkering and tweaking, the first distro suddenly begins to matter a lot more. That’s the distro they will be stuck with for several years, so Mint is definitely a solid option. Actually, most distributions that are Debian or Ubuntu based should be fine.
