Crazy how Microsoft spent the GDP of a decent sized country on acquiring game developers to bolster Xbox, then gave that strategy about 25 months to actually work before deciding “nevermind, pivot to AI then sell it for parts.”

^ yes, that. It’s just the character animations, I’m not saying the entire game is running at a low framerate. That would not look good.

This is the first I’m hearing of it, looks interesting. Also I love how a lot of developers have suddenly realized that a lower framerate in 2D games makes them look amazing. Especially when it gives some old fashioned animation principles to a very modern looking game.

Nice! This is also the first I’ve heard about this game. Looks cool. I love the idea of playing games made for Linux on these handhelds, instead of just emulated games.
Oh damn, that’s awesome! Very much a reversal of how it has been going lately with other gaming websites.
edit: OK now that you say it, I do remember hearing something about this. I must have forgotten. I listen to Aftermath’s podcast and probably heard it there. https://aftermath.site/podcasts/giant-bomb-fandom-sale-independent-media/
I don’t think it’s as good as it used to be. It got acquired by Gamespot, then Gamespot was acquired by a few different private equity firms, so of course there were layoffs across all of their sites, and Gerstmann was one of them.

The MS-DOS version of Rayman was the best one. All of the console versions had to cut various things from it. Lower resolution sprites, removing layers from the soundtrack, etc. The Sega Saturn was probably the closest to the MS-DOS version, and that one isn’t included in this edition.
I’m not really sure if this new $20 edition is worth it. You can get the MS-DOS version, plus the bonus levels mentioned in the blog post, for $1.50 right now. https://www.gog.com/en/game/rayman_forever

Hopefully this is intended to generate interest in a new Rayman game! Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends were some of the best 2D platformers in recent years. Hell, some of the best ever, in my opinion.
This 30th anniversary edition looks like it’s basically the same thing as Rayman Forever, which is currently $1.50 on GOG. It’s usually $6. https://www.gog.com/en/game/rayman_forever
This new edition says it includes versions from 5 different consoles (missing the Saturn version though, which was a really good version), plus a “making of” video. So unless you care about seeing the differences on those consoles, I’m not sure if this new one is worth $20.
I’ll always watch a presentation from a purple-haired cyberpunk over some bizbro with an array of asshole-shaped logos behind him.
(Actually, her presentation about using Qt in a car UI went way over my head, so I only watched a few minutes of it. But I’m watching exactly zero minutes of anything Nadella says nowadays.)

How does a company like this make money? Like, is it basically a consulting firm that plans to do development on core Linux features? Custom dev work that they are also able to open source? They already have quite a few employees on the about page.

They definitely do! A very distinctive look for FC2, another thing that sets it apart from the rest of the series. (I mean, OK, Blood Dragon is very distinct, too, but that’s kind of another thing.)
Unfortunately, there are still no computers that can run Crysis well. Some things are outside the reach of current science. Maybe in another ten years or so, we’ll get there. It’s still worth playing, though.

My opinion about Far Cry 2 did a complete 180 over the last few years. When it first came out, all I remember thinking was that it was less technically impressive than Crysis. (I was just obsessed with graphics in 2008. There were many of us like that. I have changed.) Now I see it as the most distinct entry in the series.

No, but it does have three antennas, which you can position to form The Trident of Portseidon.

Thank you! That’s too bad.

That’s interesting, I’ll try to learn more about that.
So, in this case, the community I was trying to post to was !vinyl@lemmy.world. There is also a user with that name on lemmy.world. If I search “vinyl@lemmy.world” on Mastodon, does that mean both of them should show up? And what would their names be? One would start with ! and the other start with ?

I think that’s just a way of getting a link to the community, but it doesn’t actually tag the community in your post or make it get posted into that community. I just tried it, and the post does not show up in the community that I mentioned with !.
If you close the program, you might lose information. Like information about sailors.
I find that it’s good enough for things like the main menu or the pause menu. But I don’t find it usable if I’m having to accurately click something while gameplay is happening. And if I want to minimize the game and look something up on the web, it’ll take me five attempts to click a link with it.
Damn, this looks good! This is a huge coincidence: just a few days ago, I was hoping that something like this existed when another thread reminded me of Unreal 2’s long-dead multiplayer mode.
