Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•When did Cory Doctorow stop thinking that Jeff Bezos was cool?
21·1 month agoIt probably has to do with the enshittification of Amazon, at least in part. Note how he praises the recommendation algorithm, while in a talk I recently saw he criticized how that same algorithm now pushes promoted products and Amazon knockoffs over what would be best for the customer.

World News@lemmy.world•Children with cancer scammed out of millions fundraised for their treatment, BBC findsEnglish
38·1 month agoI’m not sure there’s anything there, so let’s make a special place for them right here
I was already somewhat interested in Linux (as a long time Windows user) when I started studying Computer Science, mainly for it’s core philosophy of freedom and openness.
Given that most courses used Linux as the default OS I installed Ubuntu on my laptop to dual boot it with Windows, and began getting familiar with it.
Over the years I started using Linux more and more, making it my main OS, with Windows still installed for the few programs I couldn’t use otherwise. Over time this set of programs became smaller and smaller, until it was just games.
Last year I bought and assembled a new PC to replace my laptop for daily uses, and given the higher specs and better support (AMD GPU instead of Nvidia) I see no reason to have Windows on it at all. Everything I need runs perfectly fine there.
I use Arch, btw.

Europe@feddit.org•Meloni Weighs Overhaul of Italy’s Voting Laws to Help ReelectionEnglish
4·3 months agoSo, same shit as all electoral reforms in Italy ever. There are better ways (STV) but as long as people in power only care about being reelected with a majority we’ll always be stuck with these shitty systems.

Technology@beehaw.org•"Valve must stop making excuses": Steam under fire for "significant price disparity for PC games," causing regional pricing that's "often 20% to 30% higher than the dollar equivalent"
7·4 months agoI remember someone saying that it makes sense to price games less in lower income areas of the world, otherwise most people wouldn’t be able to afford them

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What was the incident in your school?
11·5 months agoWe had a few days a year when lessons were suspended and students attended self organized activities instead.
An entire class decided to sneak out instead, went to a bar and some students got drunk before coming back to school. One such student went to the bathroom, zipped up his pants without properly storing his equipment and ended up requiring medical attention including some stitches.
I never met the guy or even know who he was, but the whole school was talking about it for a week or more.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Someone should make an anticapitalist Dexter. A serial killer who kills evil rich people.
7·7 months agoYeah, the schpiel gets a bit repetitive after a while and you know the good guys will eventually win with some weird last minute twist, but for me the show is carried mostly by the characters and their chemistry. It’s the reason I rewatch a few episodes every now and then

9·7 months agoNot exactly that, but Leverage gets close. Stealing back from rich people who stole first. Except the rich guy rarely ends up dead.

World News@lemmy.world•Deal with EU will make food cheaper and add £9bn to UK economy, says No 10English
16·8 months agoI don’t expect it any time soon.
While public opinion seems slightly in favor it’s far from a done deal. Also I don’t think the EU would make the same concessions the UK enjoyed in the past, which would make negotiations longer and harder.
