I personally found it a somewhat interesting use case, although rarely needed it and they have also implemented other “AI” stuff like the website translation tool which allowed me to avoid Google translate (and is fully local)

The customer doesn’t know what they want, and they are always wrong.
Do you want enshittification? Because that’s what the authors of all the enshittification have said in the last decade
Providing a solid product and trying new things (specially things that can be toggled off in the settings, although it could be easier) is not incompatible and might uncover new useful use cases. I don’t love all the recent developments but all the hate is overblown
So it’s a PR problem?
I hate how everything depends on marketing (manipulation)
Thank you for your input
I still don’t understand the hate towards the AI features in Firefox.
Could they focus on other topics? Yes, but to get new users they have to meet them where they are and since Firefox is Foss you can remove what you don’t like by joining a project focused on that.
IMHO some of the features are cool, specially, because it’s local AI with no dependency on any provider
Could someone explain in a civilised manner why you don’t like the AI features?

Europe@feddit.org•Twenty years on: Did joining the EU make new members richer?English
3·1 month agoGreat question.
We are building, although not enough, a lot of houses, unfortunately, a big chunk is high income/luxury housing and another big chunk is used as an investment vehicle which can sit idle for years even when it’s placed in the middle of our biggest cities.
For some extra context I leave this excerpt from another comment:
In Portugal we have more than 170,000 (state/private) empty houses. A fund of more than 100 million euros (and counting) for the renovation/construction of public/cooperative housing which has been collecting dust for 2 years now. We have the resources to fix this, but our politicians seem more preoccupied in punishing 10K people for being Muslim (they have valid concerns, wrong solutions)

2·1 month agoI’m mentioning this issue in the context of the EU, due to the EU naturally allowing a more free flow of people and capital. Which is great for the “core” of the EU and at the same time the cause of big issues in the peripheries.
The same would occur in any kind of free movement agreement.
I give the benefit of the doubt to those who implemented this ideas, I understand the logic, I’m just not convinced by the results.

2·1 month agoThe tax incentives for digital nomads are a big issue for sure. I love meeting digital nomads, always a fun conversation, I just don’t understand why we should subsidize highly paid individuals looking for a cheap place to live for a while. They do not create roots or care much about the country they live in. If things go south they will leave and the people of the country they enjoyed will be burdened with all the issues.
I say we welcome all digital nomads if they wish to live with us, but they should pay their due like everyone else.

3·1 month agoI don’t know much about the American phenomenon you mentioned so I can’t comment on that.

1·1 month agoI don’t think the EU per se is the reason for this. I think the free flow of foreign capital into industries of essential goods is more to blame, and that lax regulation does come with the EU.

24·1 month agoThis is a confusing issue to me.
On one hand I understand the value of the EU to my country’s (Portugal) development on the other I take real issue with how the influx of foreign capital has priced out most common workers from buying a house before they’re 30/40, which directly impacts one’s ability to start a family. Two of our greatest obstacles to wellbeing.
I love some initiatives like the tighter regulation on big tech, but fear the power of a supranational organisation over Portugal’s democratic process. An organisation which is perceived as not so democratic.

Europe@feddit.org•Far-Right Chega Failed to Live Up to Its Ambitions in Portugal’s Local Elections. The Party’s Popularity Is Growing, but Its Results Remain ModestEnglish
5·2 months agoNot really, local elections tend to have different results than the legislative elections, in Portugal.
For example, while PCP (communist party) has very small representation in our national parliament (2/170) it’s still the third largest party in number of mayor’s, way ahead of the far right.
The same applies to CDS (conservatives), that left the parliament a couple years ago (and came back last year) and were still able to elect 6 mayor’s.

World News@lemmy.world•Major world leader calls Trump a ‘Russian asset’ during speechEnglish
76·3 months agoI would like to point out to everyone underestimating Portugal’s influence in world politics that, while I agree it hasn’t been a military or economic major power in centuries, it has great diplomatic outreach:
- Part of the EU and has been used as an example of how to handle drug abuse
- Part of CPLP which seeks to align the interests of all Portuguese speaking countries (in Europe, South America, West and East Africa and Oceania)
- Vast naval territory in the Atlantic and the Azores which have hosted a US military base for decades
- Good relations with China especially after the return of Macau
- The current secretary general of the UN is an old portuguese Prime Minister
So while no longer a major country, it still has sway on how relations between some countries develop
