Agreed, finding a manual should always be the first step to solving a problem imo. Even when searching online, I prefer if I can find the official docs/wiki for a piece of software, then search within that.

mad_lentil@lemmy.cato Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Lemmy is a tech literate echo chamberEnglish7·2 months agoWhen I first read this I thought the title was “tech illiterate” which I thought was a bit rude, but anecdotally true.
Sure we’ve got healthy linux and programmers communities, but I think most people are just regular degular folx.
Yay I was included in a list!

It’s fun for hiding little easter eggs.

Why even have a past or future when a pure consciousness need only experience the horizon of an infinite present.

mad_lentil@lemmy.cato Technology@lemmy.world•No JS, No CSS, No HTML: online "clubs" celebrate plainer websitesEnglish1·3 months agoWe’ve gotten to the point where you aren’t considered a real professional unless you start even the smallest projects with maximum technical debt.
They’re just following the example laid out by the venture capital model, really.

mad_lentil@lemmy.cato Technology@lemmy.world•Linus Torvalds and Bill Gates Meet for the First Time EverEnglish1·3 months agoBut if the guy who created the FOSS movement says something gross, then they and everything they stand for should apparently be shunned.
They might mean that, but they didn’t say it. I don’t think they did mean it. I think they just don’t want people to forget the “problematic” aspects of someone before we go all worship mode on him.
It’s like how my partner will interject–he’s canadian!–if I mention some actor. Like she just doesn’t want me to forget that context, but other than that, I can carry on.
Maybe they did mean that, though and I’m missing some context from somewhere else in this thread.

mad_lentil@lemmy.cato Technology@lemmy.world•Linus Torvalds and Bill Gates Meet for the First Time EverEnglish2·3 months agoRandomly reminds me of some of the freakier social scifi to come out of Asimov’s typewriter. I remember one Robot story where the audience insert protagonist goes to an outer world colony where the incest taboo is not only missing, but it’s considered a faux pas to avoid sex with your family. One of the characters is in deep consternation because he doesn’t want to have sex with his daughter. Anyway, the protagonist and audience are naturally disgusted, but clearly it stuck in my head.
Academically… I don’t know. Because of my upbringing, I just can’t see it is as anything other than a severe moral crime. But I guess I could imagine a very very different world from our own where it wouldn’t be the weirdest fucking thing imaginable to even talk about it.
But that’s me bending over backwards to get inside the head of someone I think I like, like our buddy Stallman here.
We should make our own RIF
I used to love that app.
You decided on a new home yet? What’s your selection criteria.
I’d be tempted to make a single user instance, given how there’s an ansible playbook you can just run.
Arcanum manual, my beloved https://archive.org/details/Arcanum_-_Manual
I had the same experience. It could even be a long time before you were allowed to play, so reading the manual just increased the anticipation and made your mind wander wildly with all the possibilities.
