The Halloween fact is not very shocking, the most shocking fact I learned from the other thread is that 10 children die on average per day in car pedestrian accidents in the US?!

In Germany we had 74 transport related child deaths for the whole last year, 31 of them where in cars. Yes, the US has a larger population than Germany. But, like, four times larger…

ETA: Though I’m not sure where the number 10 is coming from. I can’t find it in the linked study and the graph suggests a lower number per yearday.

We have Schöffen that supposedly bridge the gap between ‘the people’ and the court. That’s a slightly different system though and they only participate in like 10-15% of court cases iirc.

Don’t get me wrong, the Marseillaise slaps, but it does have some slighltly problematic aspects.

For me it’s almost no caffeine anymore, open bedroom window and either walking or cycling for at least half an hour every day. A regular sleep schedule also helps, but I’m very bad at that.

Keep in mind that this is not true for other parts of Germany. It’s only a tiny fraction of a huge picture.

When and why did Germans become known for ‘engineering’?

I can only talk about the region I’m most familiar with, in the south-west of Germany.

I’ve read that here a big factor was inheritance law. Unlike in many other places where the eldest son inherited everything, all children (or all sons, depending on region) inherited an equal fraction. This lead to smaller and smaller plots of land and people not being able to live solely on that. Many took up a craft or manufactoring on a small scale, while still maintaining their small farms.¹

Thus, during the industialisation there were many potential workers who were already skilled and willing to come work in the factories. This kickstarted the industrialisation and gave this region an advantage we were able to ride for a long time.

Then, after WW2 (West-)Germany profited from large-scale economic help which lead to quick access to global markets.

This is of course very simplified. There are many other factors, like religion and cultural values and Germany being a centre of science, especially physics and maths, before the world wars, with many papers being published in German instead of English like today.

¹Bonus fact: This is probably also a factor why worker’s movements never gained much traction here. People didn’t see themselves as workers because they owned land.

This might be a stupid suggestion, but I have had habits and techniques I just never questioned – if this is a regular problem and not just some few items (some zippers are just shitty, I get that), have you tried changing your technique? Like pulling the end of the zipper down until it’s under a bit of tension with one hand and then pulling the actual zipper thingy away from the flap while closing the zipper with the other hand. That usually works for me.
