  • Apparently this is a hot take: He’s right. Impeachment of Trump is performative at this point. Dems still don’t have the votes in the senate to convict and remove. Trump is a lame duck president with two years left. Even if he were removed, what then? President JD Vance? That’s a lateral move at best with how much he lies too. The only difference is that JD could legally run in 2028. And if he’s already president, it’ll be tougher to get rid of him, especially if he tones down some of the MAGA behavior. Suddenly people might think that he’s reasonable compared to Trump.

Morally, and even legally, impeachment is the right thing to do. Politically, a presidential impeachment is pointless. If they’re gonna do it, do it fast, get everyone’s votes on the record, and move on.

I don’t want democrat attention on impeaching Trump when we know it won’t accomplish anything. I want them focused on legislation and creating lasting change even if Trump vetoes every bill. Better yet, start writing and updating legislation to criminalize some of the crazy stuff we’ve seen.

Just collect the evidence, prepare criminal cases, and prosecute on January 6th 2029.

As for positions other than president, yes, impeach every last one of them and refuse to confirm replacements.

  • Politics is an insane game to play. Here’s why impeaching is probably a bad idea at this point: It’s gonna take longer than two years and even if it is expedited and successful, if he’s removed, what do we gain? President JD Vance? Trump becomes a martyr, and Vance rides that into his own presidential bid in 2028.

You are morally and legally right that he needs to be impeached and removed, but will that further our goals at this point? Or will it be an unncessary distraction and a constant talking point about his victimhood for the right wing propaganda machine?

We’ve got a lame duck president now, best just to hobble him as best as they can, run out the clock, and focus on things that will make a more significant difference to the average person. Better to try to make some lasting change in the form of legislation.

  • Something I haven’t seen people talk about is the nature of the fediverse in terms of the philosophy of separate instances.

There are a lot of “general” instances that are kind of like mini-reddits. Lots of users sign up from all over, communities for a wide variety of interests. But there are also instances with a specific focus.

For example, I’m a member of midwest.social so when I look at the “local” feed, I only get communities relating to the US midwest. But of course, I can still subscribe and interact with other communities on federated insances.

Think of it like email. You can sign up for the big general purpose emails (google, outlook, icloud, etc). But you might want something different, perhaps privacy focused like Proton or Tuta. Or you can have an “instance” for your work where everyone gets an @company.com email. Or maybe you just want to spin up your own email with a vanity domain.

No matter which email server you use, you can still communicate with people on separate servers.

You don’t have to stick with the first account you create. In fact, I’d recommend that you try a few instances before you settle on one.

Beyond separate instances, there are also alternatives to Lemmy that are very similar but do some things differently. Mbin, Kbin, and Piefed are examples. And again, thanks to federation standards and everything being built to be compatible, you can subscribe to a Lemmy community from Mbin and vice versa.
