Hi everyone, I’d like to ask for some advice regarding a job I was offered.
I’m a sysadmin in training. I’ve been working in this field for about 2 years, but I have around 16 years of experience with Linux. Here’s the situation:
Over Christmas and New Year’s I stayed at a hotel where they were receiving internet via Starlink. However, in the rooms there were QR codes pointing to a bunch of different Wi-Fi networks. When I connected, I noticed that the traffic was actually going through another ISP — a small local one using a point-to-point Wi-Fi link, with very poor quality.
In my daily job we manage, among other things, UniFi access points through a controller running in an LXC container. Because of that, I mentioned the problem to the hotel and proposed a solution: installing UniFi U6 Pro APs to build a proper mesh Wi-Fi network, with a single SSID instead of the 5 or 6 they currently have, using only the Starlink connection and getting rid of that low-quality ISP.
I’ve never done a job like this before, and I’ve never physically handled a U6 device — I’ve only managed them through the controller. I feel a bit insecure about taking on this job, although on the other hand it all seems fairly straightforward. The only part that worries me is properly placing the APs to build a good mesh.
Do you have any suggestions, advice, or words of encouragement? This job would really help me — I recently became a father, and any extra income is more than welcome.
