Just a useless post but… I wanted to state, how much more fun and involved it is computing with Linux. I’m a very basic user - but still, learning more and more about this OS and how it operates, and most importantly, how awesome FOSS is, is very enjoyable. I feel like I can do anything, if I have the initiative to learn it. My dream is to be able to program something useful, and contribute to the FOSS community someday.
I hope more people can feel this same feeling, that using this OS is much more the feel of computing as it’s supposed to be, at least to me!
That’s great! I feel the same way. With Windows it was always, “OMG why can’t this just work”, but with Linux it’s more like, “hm, I bet I can figure this out.”
(Also, you can already contribute to FOSS by filing good bug reports and improving documentation, no programming needed.)
Yep, same here. Back in the day, I was upgrading my computer to win2k. There was nothing wrong with my computer, Windows was just a hog. I installed Slackware and everything was smooth and snappy. One of the things I remember, playing EverQuest on Windows, I had to use the base texture modes in the game. With Slackware, I could enable the new game textures and everything played great. That’s one of the great things about Linux, you can always find a lower footprint distro.
but with Linux it’s more like, “hm, I bet I can figure this out.”
Just to piggy back on this. When I would use Windows, back in the day, I would get really frustrated that I couldn’t do something I wanted. With Linux, there is always something you can do. If anything there is always the code I can take a look at. I need the OS to do the things I need and get the hell out of the way. On Windows, it will do the things you need, as well as things other people need, as well as things Microsoft wants that will help them make money off you; even though you’ve already paid.
I worked as a network administrator years ago. Unix mostly with a Cytrix server for windows crap. A guy I worked (This was 25 years ago), said something along the lines of,“When I deal with Windows all day, I go home just burnt out. I don’t want to get on a computer, talk to anyone, or even watch TV, I just feel done. When I’m doing Unix shit all day, I’m just tired.”
I take a utilitarian approach to computers.
I don’t see using them as fun, I just want shit to work. I also hate corporations and love my privacy.
