I’m currently listening to BTR (Bulgarian), Kino (Russian), Luke (French), the pillows (Japanese), Bjornarna (Swedish), Nova Koma (Latvian), Melt-Banana (Japanese), Republika (Polish), Ornatos Violeta (Portuguese), Starshooter (French), Chewie (Scottish), Jufkamental (Bosnian), Kult (Polish), Die Toten Hosen (German), Die Artze (German), and Ska-P (Spanish)!
In my opinion, it’s better to listen to all the best bands from everywhere rather than a mixed bag of American and British ones. Plus, they all have their own unique flavour on top of the traditional rock/punk styles, so it’s fun to listen to them!
What are some of your favourite rock/punk bands outside of the U.S. and England? I would also like to listen to some from outside Europe (I have a few Japanese ones, but that’s about it)
Mine are older but I love the Vibrators, the Sex Pistols, Wire, the Buzzcocks, and Iggy Pop. There are more, of course, but I don’t know if I’d categorize something like the Stranglers or Television as punk or rock but they’re still killer bands that I love.
For punk:
Da Slyme was a punk band from Newfoundland, Canada. About as raw as you can get. Basically a group of dudes in a basement playing into a shitty mic but it’s pretty good music if you can get past the horrible audio quality. Albums were other older albums with their covers stickered over with their own stickers because they didn’t have the money for an actual production. They had a sort of deal with a used record shop in St John’s NL for that. The shop still exists, I’ve been there a couple times, it’s pretty cool. Lots of history there.
I’m not affiliated with them at all, I just think they’re a really cool obscure punk band. My dad actually introduced me to their music. I haven’t listened to them in a while, maybe I’ll play some of their music again tonight.
For other rock:
The Tea Party (also Canadian) has some really cool stuff too. Sort of a blend of western rock and a bunch of middle eastern influences. They’ve been described as “Moroccan roll” before (play on Morocco and rock ‘n’ roll). Their album Edges of Twilight is by far their best work. Check out Sister Awake from that album for a sample of what they do. That’s their best song imo and a good litmus test to whether you’ll like them or not. They do have some more mainstream sounding music too from later albums but it’s not as good imo.

The Blue Hearts - Linda Linda The Blue Hearts are kind of THE iconic Japanese punk band, and this song was very well-known.
The Pees - やっとハッピー (Finally Happy)
Tomovsky - 我に返るスキマを埋めろ (DON’T RETURN TO YOU)
Sunny Day Service - 心に雲を持つ少年 (The Boy Who Keeps Clouds in his Heart)
Flipper’s Guitar - Camera Camera Camera! (Guitar Pop Version) Arguably one of the main bands that defined the unique 90s Shibuya-Kei genre.
Magokoro Brothers - 空にまいあがれ (Fly in the Sky)
Salon Music - Spending Silent Night
Moonriders - Cool Dynamo, Right On Fans of the game Earthbound should pay special attention to this one!
And The Pillows - Midnight Down for good measure. RIP to Shinichiro Sato, the fantastic drummer of The Pillows who died in back in March of this year. I love the drums in this song, and so many of their others. He was a great drummer with amazing chops while still doing what was best for the song. As an American I feel very lucky that I was able to see The Pillows live a couple of times.

Australia had been producing some absolutely killer punk and pub rock bands over the past while. Some of my favorites are The Chats, Amyl and the Sniffers, Ratsalad., The Gutter Girls, Mod Con, and Flangipanis.
From Japan: Otoboke Beaver.
From the Philippines: Tiger Pussy.
From Ireland: An Slua, Sprints, Gurriers, Nerves, Bucket, and some classic punk bands like Stiff Little Fingers, and The Radiators.
From Scotland: Cowboy Hunters, and Soapbox.
From France: Camera Silens, Rixe, Syndrome 81, Zone Infinie, and Tchernobyl.
Gob (Canada). Plus, their style changes pretty radically between albums (while still staying loosely bound to the punk genre) so you have options depending on your tastes.

I mean, all band names are made up in the end of the day. A lot of them are based on various pop culture references (think characters in movies or TV shows), for instance, the French band Luke’s name comes from the American movie “Cool Hand Luke”, none of the members are actually called Luke.
Die Toten Hosen literally means “the dead trousers” in German, and it’s slang for “boring” (though their music is the opposite of that!), while Die Ärtze means “the doctors” in German.
Ska-P is short for “ska punk” which is a mix of ska and punk (and it’s an awesome genre to listen too!)
Kino is Russian for “cinema”, and there’s a variant of the “absolute cinema” meme that instead used a picture of Viktor Tsoi (the GOAT) with the words “absolute Kino”
Yeah, I knew the toten hosen and die artzte, but that might date me.

I’ve made a Spotify-Playlist with my favorite german punksongs back then when I still used it. It’s pretty much my main genre. Maybe you can find some cool bands there.
