The biggest vector of companies finding out where you post is you telling your coworkers.
For hygiene purposes, never log on to personal stuff on the work wifi or the work computer. Best not to have the work wifi on your phone, but if you do, use a VPN.
Depends on the employer.
Some pay a service to have that included in the background check. These services pay databrokers (or the social media cos themselves,) for the information. (It’s not just email. It’s all the data you’ve ever given them. Including in posts or at creation)
That also includes you’re “login with google” accounts and all that.
Some companies just run your name through google.
Some only find out when it turns out you’re some kind of social leper and someone hates you enough to tell them.
Once you’re there and working, then some will be paying for the on going g service. But if your device is on their WiFi, or you use their devices, they can see where you’re going to post (and it’s best to just assume they see everything on their devices.)
Most not-home WiFi’s are set up to log everything.
If you use their computers or network there’s a pretty high chance they have some metrics on your activity.
Some employers hire agencies to investigate your social media links via your email address and other personal information that may have been provided.
does tor or vpn (trusted) help when using their network
(im all for not hiring terrible people but im paranoid that the bad guys are the employers bc it does happen)
You should really make it a practice of only using work hardware for work.
Good luck using a VPN outbound on a properly setup business network.
That would be a major security hole, and likely a violation of any ethics/business practice agreements you signed (but it shouldn’t even work in the first place).
Seriously, at one employer I was once asked to look through someone’s browser history on the computer they’d left unlocked during their lunch break.
It could really be as simple as that if you leave your computer unattended and insecure.
(As it turned out, either they were really good at covering their tracks or they just did a bit of random browsing. Nothing I didn’t do myself, so I said there was nothing really to worry about there.
They later got canned for underperforming, but their browsing habits weren’t really a point against them.)

My employer doesn’t do this (they have too much on their hands as is, being a government agency), but certain positions require security clearance and the Security Service supposedly does quite an invasive search on your social media. The background being that government agencies nowadays are considered to be infiltrated by organized crime.
