Distractions can completely derail motivation. It doesn’t happen to me because of women at the gym, but if I accidentally have the wrong intrusive thought my motivation is gone and the whole workout ends. I’ve stopped mid run and just walked out.

Maybe you’re neurotypical and don’t struggle with this. But not everyone can just “man up and power through”, as you’re implying should be done.

Sure. And that means recognizing when you shouldn’t put yourself in uncomfortable situations.

Would you encourage people with eating disorders to buy lots of snacks and hang out in the pantry? Just control your mind?

To be honest, I kind if envy that you and your mind are so aligned. I’m not so lucky. I can’t own Doritos, because I’ll either eat the entire bag, or I’ll think about them to the point where it’s annoying. So I just avoid them. It’s sad, but it’s what I have to work with.

I used to have social anxiety as bad as anyone I’ve known. That didn’t get better by avoiding situations that made me uncomfortable. It got better by putting myself in situations that forced me to talk to people and deal with my shit. Now I’m a mostly functional human being with only a moderate amount of social anxiety.

It’s like a muscle, you have to stress it and practice with it to improve.
