    So it turns out lightweight mesh is an absolute nightmare to cut and sew. I ripped up my attempt at an illusion neckline shirt in frustration.

    I still want to make an illusion neckline shirt. They’re hella cute and sometimes I wanna wear something that isn’t a plain t-shirt, y’know? So my next attempt will involve attempting to starch the absolute fuck out of the mesh before cutting it. I’ve never starched fabric, let alone for this purpose, so I guess I’ll see how it goes.

    Plan C if this doesn’t work is to try to find fabric that’s both very sheer and not at all stretchy. I have the mesh; I don’t want to do that.

      Oh, wow, I super admire that you make your own clothes! That’s so cool! I would love to make my own clothes. I know how to sew and use a machine. It’s just having the time and or the energy. Especially as my body is changing as I’m aging, I used to be able to throw anything on from the racks and it fit, now I’m lucky if I find one thing in multiple stores. I’ve now noticed how they all seem to cater to one body type. What other things do you make?

        All kinds of things! I started over a decade ago with cosplays. I don’t go to conventions as much as I used to so nowadays I generally only make a cosplay every few years.

        Lately I’ve been making underwear, because hanes, fruit of the loom and other big brands keep changing how they make womens’ underwear. It’s infuriating! I finally gave in and took the time to make my own underwear pattern. It is an absolute gamechanger. I’m never buying underwear again.

        The other thing I’ve been doing recently is altering thrifted clothes. Buying new is too expensive! So hemming jeans, adding waist darts to pants, elasticizing a knit headband that’s stretched out, and so on.

        (Sorry not sorry for the essay, I love sewing. I will gleefully yap about it all day.)
